Kids Mask Crafts for 2016 Rio Olympic Games

Summer 2016 sees the Olympic games arrive in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. People all over the world will join in the celebration of sport, featuring 207 participating nations taking part in the 28 official Olympic sports. The opening ceremony will be held on 5th August and is expected to be a vision of colour, celebrating Rio’s rich culture and famous carnival reputation.

Although Carnival is celebrated throughout Brazil and other Catholic countries, Rio de Janeiro has long been regarded as the Carnival capital of the world. Rio Carnival is a wild 5-day celebration, held 40 days before Easter to announce the arrival of Lent. Although Carnival itself is not timed to coincide with the Olympics, the fun and celebration of Carnival is sure to filter into the atmosphere of the  2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Why not get the kids involved in the fun this Summer with our colourful carnival mask making ideas? Simple to make and super fun to wear, perfect as a simple home craft or as an Olympic themed craft for a  kids craft group, such as Messy Church, Brownies or Scouts.

Metallic Olympic Mask Craft Idea

Rio Olympic 4

You Will Need:

For a simple mask use a foiled card mask as the base and embellish with feathers, foam and jewels. Go for the carnival look with foam circles and feathers or try your hand at something a little more complex with the Olympic rings design. To ensure the circles are the same size, we recommend using something to draw around like a glass or cup. For hints and tips on making these masks, see the full idea on our website.

For a more involved craft, get the kids to sponge paint a formed mask base (such as paper mache) with the Olympic colours.
